THE TONY'S 2017 BOI

alright listen up i like talking like a gangsta sometimes just for fun bruuhhhhhhhh.
anyway
ive only really listened to dear evan hansen and the great comet so far but i watched a musicaltheatermash video and it seems like they are the two front runners for best musical(they are both nominated) and its a very close thing AND HERES WHY

dear evan hansen is a beautiful musical, well crafted and all that jazz(MUSICAL PUNS?REFERENCES?IDK) but itss one of those things that not a lot happens in it but it carries a message, like a john green book because it spreads the message of teen anxiety and suicide and blahblah blah and it is very much every inch a musical but with a modern twist that makes it stand out and be remembered.

the great comet it based on the really old russian novel war and peace by a russian guy. the musical is based on part of it and was originally an off broadway production but was picked up by broaday(i think? do people get approached by broadway) it is not a traditional musical in that it doesnt rhyme, theres no really catchy showtune and theres a sort of narration about it? its sung through which is really hard to do and give the story justice, but like hamilton it NAILS IT. there is a way that im really crap at describing but its like the characters are narrating themselves/eachother which is like a nod towards the book it is based on and the dialogue is very old (they say things like 'i will implore him to do so') which reminds you that this is a story set in 1800s russia which i like but i do enjoy a catchy singalong.
but something about the great comet, something that i like is that in doing so its not confining itself within the 'typical broadway musical' box which i think is what art is all about, without avant garde works of art nothing changes, and whats the good in living like that.
so it could go either way and i love both musicals but there is a small part of me leaning towards the great comet, not because of the musical itself but because of what it is, what it represents and means, the statement it makes for art as a concept i guess?
does any of this actually make sense?? probably not but OOOOOOOHHH WEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLLLL.
